I love to capture charm and personality in my artworks, to be able to feel the soul of the piece. In this class you will learn how to do that too, by using soft loose strokes of soft pastel to bring 2 lovely little mice to life. This wonderful expressive medium is a joy to work with. Soft pastels can seem a bit intimidating if you haven’t used them before, but I find they are one of the most immediate and expressive of artistic tools to use. A simple swipe here or there creates instant results, and they enable you to maintain a looseness by their very nature.
These lessons are a simple process of adding layers of pastel, building up the dark and light areas, adding details with simple strokes and marks. I will show you an easy method to get your initial shape and sketch on the paper, it’s a kind of modelling process to begin with and super simple.
What pastels do you need for this class? I recommend you get the softest of soft pastels (some “soft pastes” are actually pretty hard), I use 2 brands – Sennelier half sticks (don’t get the full sticks they are a different formula and more crumbly) and Art Spectrum Extra Soft Pastel Squares. The softer the pastels the easier it is to create in the way we do with this class. You do not need my exact colours, a simple set will be enough to start and you can substitute colours.
In these lessons you will follow me step by step as we create our mice. This class contains 2 hours of video.
This is an open ended workshop with no expiration date. Plus all the videos are downloadable and yours to keep!
Who is this class for?
This is a beginners to intermediate class incorporating basic drawing and soft pastel techniques. You will gain access to 2 hours of video (each lesson is one hour) in which I walk you through each step of the process – no sped-up parts, you see everything as I explain it.
You will have access to my combined private FACEBOOK GROUP with others that are also taking my classes to share your work and get feedback.
So easy, informative classes……will even have the non artist like me producing master pieces. Honestly these classes are great fun, with easy to follow steps to suit all levels of expertise. Be warned very addictive, you won’t be able to stop at just one class.

What supplies will I need for the class?
Please use what you already have in your collection.
The items below are what I have used in this class.
- 30x30cm (12×12”) smooth or textured cardstock or similar tinted thick paper
- Soft Pastels in various colours (refer to colour swatches below)
- – I use: Art Spectrum Extra Soft Squares and Sennelier Half sticks
- Pastel pencils – I use Faber Castel Pitt or Gioconda (purple and green) – You can get by without these and use a black charcoal pencil instead
- Vine / willow charcoal
- Black charcoal pencil – I use Generals Soft
- Kneadable eraser
- Table top Easel
- Cloth rags for your hands / or paper towel
- Fixative (optional) – I use Krylon Fine Art 1374
*** I use an easel in this class – a small table mounted one, these lessons are best done vertically due to the pastel dust so I highly recommend getting an easel if you do not have one.
